a5c7b9f00b High school student Kei Kurono meets up with childhood friend Kato Masaru one day by chance encounter. As the two are in the subway chatting, Kato notices a homeless man on the subway train tracks. Kato goes down on to the tracks to move the man off the tracks and persuades Kei to help. But soon after helping the man, they are hit by a subway train and killed... or maybe not. Immediately after being hit by the train, the two are suddenly in an apartment from which they can't leave, along with some other people who were also in some near death experience. In this apartment there is also a black sphere called Gantz. Kei and the others have to obey Gantz's rules if they want to live. They have to participate in missions in which the objective is to eliminate aliens. But who or what are these aliens? are Kei, Kato and the others alive or dead? A group of people are resurrected from their deaths by a mysterious black ball called GANTZ to combat alien criminals hiding on Earth. The original comic, Gantz, by Hiroya Oku is one of the most groundbreaking and revolutionary mangas of all time. Artwork, innovation and superb character portrayal and development. All that makes the comic a masterpiece is s**tted upon in this failed attempt to recreate the world, that Hiroya Oku so masterfully crafted, into an animated form. I could tell you not to waste your time watching the anime, but i would rather tell you to download and read the manga at www.stoptazmo.com. Even if you liked the anime, the manga is an experience entirely on its own. Recalling memories from the manga is like recalling what it was like to kiss a girl for the first time (assuming the girl was attractive). It brings about a calming nostalgia. Getting lost in this world has same effect of getting lost int he world of Star Wars. I kid you not. After reading it you WISH you were there. So here is why i gave this anime series a 3. Bad animation, narrative flow contains no parallels to original work, music is choppy and corny, and the color work is sloppy. I was going to give it a 4, but then i recalled the HORRIBLE English voice acting. This series had an incredible amount of potential and could have been as influential and popular as shows such as Cowboy Beebop, Evangelion and (even though I'm not a big fan) Naruto. Major disappointment This anime has everything you can hate an anime for... Usually Japanese cartoons are great because the medium gives the opportunity for artists to express themselves, their ideas even if they haven't billions of dollars for it. They can communicate thoughts through moving images, but in a price of a Hollywood car chase with blow ending. They can draw thing for a relatively tiny amount of money and they let the viewers imagination finish the job. The problem with Gantz is here the vision is missing. The makers had one idea and they tried to blow it up to a series. The content is almost none existent. They could have put the 26 episodes in max. 8. Every episode start with a recap, there are a lot of flashbacks just to show the same things again and again. You have to (HAVE TO) watch the OP every time and you hate ED every time it starts. Usually that isn't a problem at other occasions: by hearing them many-many times you get to like the song, but with Gantz it just won't work: especially the ED is annoying as f.ck. There are a lot of plot holes, inconsistencies - you get facepalms in almost every episode (the positive reviewers just missed this for some reason). There is a lot of fan service, violence, gratuitous nudity (the problem is not nudity, but gratuity - just to show some tits without serving the plot or anything). You feel like every character is a retard. You never develop any emotional bond to them, because they are just so unearthly stupid. They chit-chat or give a sermon when they are shot at, or in danger of imminent death. Sometimes (you think gloating) it's like they better be dead, it is easier for the rest of the world. The animation is subpar, that would be a minor annoyance if the plot would be OK. But it's not.
